Beauty with Less: Interior Design for a Tranquil Store in Maastricht

They thought they would rent the house only briefly, a stopover in a quiet corner of Flanders between journeys. Sixteen years and three children later, Victor and Liza van der Stouwe are still there. Their interior is light, minimal, and calm. “Beauty with less — that sums it up,” Liza says.
No dog blends into a home quite like Whisky, the family’s puppy. His warm brown coat matches the old tiled floor in the living room, where shades of brown, white, and beige set the tone. “We keep it deliberately quiet,” Liza explains. “It has to be, with such a lively floor. We love it, though. When we moved in, there was laminate. Discovering those tiles underneath was a gift.”

Liza has a gift for uncovering beauty where others see only dust. Victor smiles: “She once picked up a large rusty nail and gave it a place in our interior. At first I thought it was odd, but over time I began to see its beauty too. That’s what happens when you place something in the right context.”
“Not owning something is also a form of freedom.”

Their philosophy is simple: resist trends, choose what you love, and let a home grow into its own timeless style. “That way you don’t have to keep renewing it,” says Liza.
The couple still rents their house, a choice that surprises many. “Why wait until we’ve saved enough to buy a place like this, when we can enjoy it now?” Liza asks. For Victor, it is even more profound: “Not owning something is also a form of freedom. It suits who we are.”
Sixteen years ago, they arrived in Moelingen, in the Voeren region. Raised in the Netherlands, they fell for the sense of space — the house, the landscape, the outdoors. “We love living outside,” Victor says. “Here, we have more than enough room.”
